Why Helmut is so that?
Maybe because he is a foreigner who is living in new york at issues faced in their country. In the film said that he come from Germany, and that is there to work and earn money. He hasn't have family, but needs the money to support him, also follows the rules of the country that he came, ie it is one of the reasons why he's afraid to experiment with others things but are afraid of losing their job because if lose it, or have poroblem to any citizen of america, maybe being deported and have to return to Germany where he is in a situation that he does not like a lot.
